Trucking featured in new Discovery Channel show among monster machinery

March 23, 2010

In late March 2010, the Discovery Channel will be premiering its new reality show, “I Could Do That”. This show offers participants the unique opportunity to operate a piece of heavy-duty machinery that they would otherwise never have a chance to work with.

Not surprisingly, an 18-wheel tractor-trailer made the cast of monster machinery.

Described as “the most visible vehicle on the road today” by the Discovery Channel, the transport truck is featured among heavy-duty beasts like a steel slab carrier, an M60 army tank and a locomotive diesel engine—highlighting it as a commonly-seen but challenging vehicle to operate.

Markel was fortunate enough to be selected to participate in I Could Do That, and the trucking episode was filmed at Markel’s Safety and Training Services facility in Guelph, Ontario, using a Markel truck.

In this particular episode, a personal trainer from Halifax, Nova Scotia is challenged with the task of learning to drive a transport truck in a week—under the guidance of Markel trainer Rob Spencer, while surrounded by cameras and crew. The challenge wasn’t easy.

Watch this episode when it airs on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 8:30pm, EST.

Below are some still photographs of some of the cast, crew and activity during the week-long shoot in Guelph.
